Using a pool for family portraits
When you are checking off the list for a stellar family portrait session you are probably thinking…
1. Stylish outfits,
2. Beautiful location
3. Big smiles
And not in a million years would you think to look in your own backyard pool as a location. But for those out there that are tired of the photos looking the same year after year, I love to mix it up, especially if there are any “fish” children that would enjoy a new way to do family portraits. Luckily in Orange County the weather is usually nice all year round to jump in the pool, and get some natural and playful shots.
What you need to know about a pool shoot for your family-
First off, everyone should be a comfortable swimmer. It isn’t good enough to just dunk your head under, each and every family member really needs to feel comfortable and calm and be able to spin-dive, cannon-ball, swim and twirl, to get the shots you would like. Ideally, I love when you don’t need goggles, as you can see more of the cute kid face that grows up way too fast. Swimmers look great while wearing a suit with a bit of zing! Warm colors look great against the cool tint of the water. I love red and orange…
When you look in your backyard pool, pay attention to when the sun hits the water. It is better to have the whole pool in the shade, or whole pool in the sun, I personally like a bit of sun peaking through, but half and half in the sun will be very hard to make work.
Personality and connection
It is amazing to me how much a spunky and lively child will love a shoot like this. There is so much to Show off to me as a photographer, that the session zips by and it usually brings upon a repeat invitation to swim. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for a parent or two to jump in and get playful images.
Who doesn’t love a piggyback ride to the bottom of the pool? Well I suppose many, but if you do want to hop along, I will be there to try and get the shot.
Of course, a lot of patience and repetition is involved in getting the shot just perfect, but with a playful attitude you can get some willing participants and a fun afternoon in the pool, with a photo or two to treasure in the meantime.
