Summer swim in the best swimming beach in Laguna

The turquoise waters of Laguna Beach just outside of Los Angeles can be inviting on a warm summer day. Often times the adventurous swells surfers have come to love in souther California surf culture are the same waves that make swimming in laguna difficult for young children. Sandy shore breaks, and strong undertows come with the swells. What can start as a hot day at the beach can be disappointing when the water is not safe to swim for the young ones. One beach I love to visit when the swells are in town, is Goff beach, just outside the Montage Hotel smack dab in the middle of Laguna Beach.

The beach offers protection from the swells by way of a large rock called Goff Island. The almost east facing beach is sometimes the safest and easiest beach to swim in when the swells hit.

I love to photograph children playing, and I love the water, so making portraits of children playing in the water is my most favorite activity. The two fish in the photos below have been in front of my camera for as long as they have been alive, and many times we find a way to shoot in the water. This year, after a long day of surf camp I thought for sure this year they would be too exhausted to jump in the water, but thankfully they could not resist the clear sparkle just before the sun went down.

Why I love shooting in the water

Nothing can beat a series of school portraits over the years, that photo where you sit on a stool and smile. Something about seeing a kid grow up this way, a small slice of time over the years makes it an easy project for parents. But as a portrait photographer I am always looking for ways to 1. Bring out the personality and joy in children, and 2. Try and capture something that would look similar to art on the walls of your home.

Tiny heads bobbing up in the water, or feet sticking out can be that perfect huge print on the walls of your home.

Traditional family portraits are good too.

That is why I start all sessions with the traditional family poses, and portraits. All the basic smiling photos are needed just as those school portraits serve a purpose of their own. We want to look back and see us all together as a group, and remember what it meant to be a family no matter what that looks like.
